Some sometimes fun and sometimes interesting things happened this year. I NEVER THOUGHT:
- I could place in the Top 25 NorCal blog contest. My readers wanted me to win and didn’t mind if I reminded them to vote every 24 hours. I love my friends! I love the new ones I cornered in the parking lot at swim practice—also willing voters.
- I would have even one worthy perspective to tell the world on NPR, let alone two in one year. And never did I think I would be on the radio for anything.
- I could love a pope so much and follow him around like a Justin Beiber groupie, write letters, hang an autograph pic on my fridge.
- My older brother would be the hostess with mostest. He left a copy of Time Magazine’s Person of the Year issue, Pope Francis, on my bed when I arrived. He made me peanut butter toast before taking me to the airport at 5:30 AM.
- My boys could make laundry part of their Sunday routine. My youngest pines for the days when all the clothes were washed, folded and put away for him. Sometimes he is lucky.
- Healing from knee surgery could take soooo long, 9 months and counting. Knees are fussy.
- Sunshine could be stressful. If you grow up where it rains and snows, sunshine is not to be wasted. I feel like I need to be outside all the time; I’m exhausted. Please rain in 2014. More importantly, we REALLY need it.
- Writing a book could take so much discipline. A new author acquaintance writes 6 hours a day and she’s a mother of three-year-old. I’m seriously behind and unstructured.
- I could spend so much time at the gym and actually care about what I look like while I am there. I spend more on workout clothes than street clothes now. Like I said before, knees are fussy; they need a lot of attention. May as well look pretty in the process, less any Tammy Faye nuances, not even spider eyes.
- I could get into social media: twitter and facebook. Anyone up for tweeting, follow me @shoezle. I’m following the Pope and Nikki Minaj. I’d like to follow my friends too.

Thanks for all your support in 2013. You keep me inspired, believing and writing. Any fun surprises for you?

You forgot the one about begrudgingly succumbing to the virtues of cycling in spite of the constant pestering of your hubby to join him in the silly sport!
10.5 I never thought super-cyclist hubby would want to ride with me or for me to ride at all. I also can’t believe he would tell me to chase after another lady cyclist and I would do it just to prove I could and to make my hubby proud.
Hey Francie – I never thought I would be back in school after being out for 25 years. Finished my first semester of grad school! It was even fun! 🙂
Now that is a surprise–grad school and it’s fun! Guess it’s different when you go when you want to go and not because you have to go. YAY for YOU!
